Part 1 Chpts. 5&6
Starting on p. 51 third paragraph, Symes says, "It's a beautiful thing, the destruction of words." Then on p. 52 fourth paragraph, he says, "In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it." Finally, on p. 53 third paragraph he concludes, "Orthodoxy means not thinking - not needing to think. Orthodoxy is unconsciousness." What is he talking about? Why would Winston conclude that Symes will be vaporized when he displays such zeal for the party? What are your thoughts? Was there anything you didn't get a chance to bring up in the class discussion on Tuesday?

I thought that these chapters were weird. I mean what symes is saying about changing there language it seems like he basically wants it to be so people won't have to talk. It seems like thought crime would be impossible because they wouldn't have to think. This book seems like they are controlling everything about these peoples lives. I don't feel like it is a problem in the U.S but I know in lots of other country's this is how things are ran. I feel like i can do anything in the U.S as along as it is ethical. I also think that there has to be laws because if there wasn't people would be out of control and there would be no punishment for them.
Vocabulary is so important to have so that we can express ourselfs. I can see how controling the words would help control the people like Big Brother wants to but i really don't think they could stop thoughtcrimes, but just the control of expression.These last chapters were very intersting in the fact i felt like Winston is really starting have a stronger desire to break away from the Govn't.
words are a large part of expression and to limit it is taking away feedom of mind and, limitting our minds brings us to a state of dullness, where we become dependent on others to think for us and exprestion comes out in other ways like hatred.. its the governments way of degrading our human rigths and trapping us to not think for our selves, dependent on the gov to make the laws....pritty crappy
