1984 Ch. 1-2
As weird as this society seems, is there anything that strikes you as familiar? Is there anything in Oceania or about Winston Smith that you recognize?
We are at Capitol Reef Field Station to learn, experience and explore. Here are our comments.

This society seems weird. I country definatly isn't like this today but, Other country's are there are alot of rules that people in other counrty's have to live by. It kind of reminds me of the Holcost when people snuck around to do things so the didn't get caught.
This Book is very diferent from any others that I've read. And the way the govnt. controls everything really makes me be thankfull for our freedom. But I think i can relate to winston in the fact that he starts to thinks on his own and not how the govnt tells him! And thought police, I think we would all be in trouble if we had them today!!
I totally agree with Trents’ comment. Although the society of Oceania can seem to be a bit outlandish, I can actually see the familiar concept of “Big Brother” that has been lurking throughout our history. The way in which the society of Oceania has been ruled, reminded me the era of McCarthyism in the United States. During much of the 1940’s and 50’s there was a growing fear of communism and disloyalty to the government. It was a time when many people falsely accused others of being communist, very much like the way people in Oceania are accused of committing Thought Crimes. Friends and families turn against one another; people truly had no one that they could trust. Like most of the people in Oceania, many Americans during the McCarthy era were on the lookout for anyone who seemed to be deceitful to the government, while at the same time making sure that they themselves did not appear to be disloyal to the government.
